Sugarplums & Solemnity

Free & Open to the Public – No Ticket Required.

Kick off the holiday season with a free concert featuring the Shippensburg University Community Orchestra under the direction of Ryan Kozak and Shippensburg University Concert Choir under the direction of Elizabeth Aragunde.

Few compositions are as synonymous with the holiday season as Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. His Nutcracker Suite, featuring eight of the ballet’s most popular movements, has become a holiday tradition in its own right—perhaps even more familiar to audiences than the ballet itself. From the delicate Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy to the exuberant Waltz of the Flowers, these enchanting melodies capture the wonder and joy of the season.

The Shippensburg University Concert Choir then joins the orchestra for Schubert’s magnificent Mass No. 6 in E-flat Major. One of the composer’s final works, completed just months before his death in 1828, Schubert never lived to hear it performed. Rich in musical contrasts, the Mass showcases the expressive power of the chorus alongside brilliant writing for brass and woodwinds. Intricate chromatic fugues, breathtaking harmonic shifts, and moments of profound lyricism make this monumental work a moving celebration of the human voice and orchestral artistry.
